About that new mystery respiratory illness impacting dogs

While the illness hasn’t been identified yet, it is affecting dogs.

Executive Director of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab Kevin Snekvik, whose facility has been researching the condition, described the illness’s symptoms in an interview with KIRO7. “Your dog will run a fever and they won’t feel good,” Snekvik said. “They’ll become lethargic, meaning they want to lie around more when normally they’d be wanting to play outside… and the coughing part of it, that becomes more productive like a wet cough, like a hacking cough.”

Per the Oregon Department of Agriculture, symptoms also include sneezing, eye or nose discharge, fatigue, blue or purple gums from oxygen deprivation, trouble breathing and negative tests for other common respiratory illnesses.

Until the disease is identified and treatment developed, it is recommended that you keep your dog up to date on their bordetella to fight off kennel cough and get a flu vaccine. Having these kinds of underlying conditions could make them more susceptible to being inflicted. And avoid any nose to nose touching.

In addition, we at Tidy Dog clean our floors and wipe down the tables multiple times a day, and with our 3 sided, baby gated pens, your fur baby is never allowed to touch another dog in the salon. We’re proud to say we’ve never had any kind of an outbreak in our 13 year history.

Meet Cally, a rescue Husky who just got a “makeover” at Tidy Dog Pet Salon.

Having been abused after being a long term target of water balloons, she was not at all comfortable with her bath but managed to get through it. With a good blow dry, brush out, and silhouette trim doesn’t she look fantastic? We have a special affinity for abused dogs and even offer a “First Rescue” discount!
